No more connecting to shit cali servers,Back to the east coast where they should have left them to begin with.

   As many of you know, Firefall's servers are hosted in the Amazon Web Services cloud. This gives us great flexibility in bringing up more servers when traffic is high and decreasing those servers when traffic is low to save money (a major cost savings for an MMO). Our infrastructure also allows us to do maintenance on servers in a live environment by seamlessly moving players onto servers in any region while we work on things behind the scenes. Last year, we had three AWS locations; US-West, US-East, and EU. We spent some time in the second half of last year moving many of the services off of US-East and onto US-West primarily to improve game performance on newer hardware.

   This did cause some problems however. First, while the individual game server performance was better, the latency between regions increased which meant that updating databases with character data, item pickups, etc. took longer to replicate which could present some problems as players hopped between servers. It also meant that if we did shuffle players from one region to another, the gameplay latency was much higher for some users and presented challenges for those players in such a high-action game like Firefall.

   We avoided some of these problems by leaving some critical services up and running in US-East as backup or as primary services where latency was important between datacenters. After months of analysis, debate, and hand-wringing, we have decided to move all of our US operations back to US-East and disable the US-West datacenter.

   Ultimately this will provide the most consistent experience for players and help us save costs on running too many services in multiple datacenters. We did not come to this decision lightly and we realize that this will have an impact on west coast players who have gotten used to the very low pings that US-West offers. In the end, our goal is to provide the best experience possible to as many players as possible. Our Technical Operations team will be performing this maintenance today. As mentioned above, we are able to do this mostly unseen to players due to our unique infrastructure, but you should be aware that there may be hiccups and, if necessary, downtime. We will do our best to communicate these issues as quickly as possible.
